Judge Roy Hofheinz was a larger-than-life character who dominated the Houston scene in the 1960s. He’s the one who dreamed up the Astrodome, the first step in a larger plan for hotels, shopping, a nautical park, and a world-class theme park. Oh, and a monorail to connect everything. The Dome got built, of course, and the Astroworld Hotel. And the park. And it was really nice while it lasted. Here’s what it looked like when it opened.
